Step away from that moth eaten LBD: ASOS has redefined party dressing for this season and the results are spectacular. But among the crushed velvet, slippery silks and jewel-encrusted adornments is one hero buy in particular that absolutely everybody’s talking about.
You might hear the words sheer, maxi, embellished and bird print all in the same breath and think: niche. You’d be wrong. That is exactly the way to describe a certain ASOS dress;: the much-anticipated, £180 party frock to be precise, which went on sale earlier this month, only to sell out completely within a few days.
If that doesn’t prove to us all that right now, party dressing is breaking free of convention, then it’s hard to see what does. Where once one might rely on that fail-safe black dress and a sensible pair of heels, it’s now about going for gold, being bold, more is more… let’s be honest: it’s about doing whatever the hell you like.
And, like the virtual best friend you never knew you had, ASOS knows it. As well as the embellished birds (if you managed to bag one, kudos to you), ASOS’s Salon range also has metallic slips delicately covered by sheer, rose-embroidered layers, as well as an entirely transparent maxi seemingly made of blooms (which landed yesterday- so don’t dally).
There are also oversized, sheer frocks in sorbet shades, reminiscent of designer Molly Goddard’s much-lauded creations. For those of you shuddering at the sheer thought, take a leaf out of ASOS’s own lookbook and style your dress over jeans, with a cami or bodice layered underneath. Fashion’s mood for maximalism has crept into our party pieces and we could not be happier.

In even better news, chances are your new ASOS dress is already in the sale. Last time we checked, a few of these sheer sensations had been significantly reduced, with all sizes still in stock. If you’re wise, you’ll run like the wind. Or click like the wind, anyway.
