The prestigious Mercury Award 2011 nominations have been released and the girls are shining through. Of the 12 acts shortlisted, announced by Lauren Laverne, four are female sing-songwriters, including Adele, Katy B, Anna Calvi and PJ Harvey.
We reckon it’ll be a battle of the redheads, with our bets on Adele and Katy B to take a Mercury gong. This is the second time Adele has been nominated for the award, with her album 21, which is the biggest selling album of the year. Plus with Adele’s record-breaking 11-week stint at No 1 with Someone Like You (awww, we love that song!) we reckon she’ll just pip Katy B. We kind of hope so – just so we can hear that infamous cackle at the awards!
Double Brit award winner Tinie Tempah, has also been nominated, and may give Adele some competition, battling it out for the prize fund of £20,000. The overall 2011 Mercury Award winner will be revealed on 6th September. We can’t wait! JG
