How To Get The Perfect Baftas-Style Bun

Holliday Grainger and Taylor Swift with chic buns

As awards season gets well underway, we thought we’d treat you to a little hair how-to of the most sought after look so far – the bun. With celebs sporting it at the Grammys, the Baftas and the Golden Globes, we've got an easy step by step from hairstylist Charles Worthington who created the amazing topknots at the Baftas. Enjoy!

Step 1: Start by applying Limited Edition Volume Big Bouncy Spray, £5.19, to dry hair, then blow-dry it in to give your style ultimate hold that'll last all evening.

Step 2: Curl the ends with tongs or a wand to give the hair movement. Then run your fingertips through the ends with a little Front Row High Definition Crackle Wax, £6.29.

Step 3: Pull all your hair into a loose ponytail at the crown and then twist it into a bun.

Step 4: Once it’s tight, tease out stray hairs to give the final look a really soft finish. Secure with hair pins and a spritz of Brilliant Shine Max Hold Hairspray, £5.19.

Beauty Tried And Tested: Shine Sprays

Beauty Tried And Tested: Shine Sprays from high street brands

Want to know what the best beauty products are before you buy? LOOK is here to help... this week our very own Beauty Editor Sophie Beresiner and LOOK reader Rosheen Brooks have put shine sprays to the test...

Beauty Editor: Good for taming frizz and adding shine, but it weighed my hair down. The mini bottle is good for keeping in your handbag for a boost after work. Rosheen: As this was a pump spray, it was quite heavy and left my hair greasy. It’d be better for thick hair. Beauty Score: 2/5

Beauty Editor: This was like using a traditional hairspray. It definitely made my hair shinier but I didn’t notice any difference in volume like it promised. Rosheen: I blow-dried my hair on a cooler setting as the directions recommended and my hair smelt lovely and stayed glossy all night. Beauty Score: 4/5

Beauty Editor: This gave my hair a mega-shine boost without feeling like I had lots of product in it. A hair SOS essential.   Rosheen: I liked the fine mist as it gave a more even coverage than the others. My hair looked much shinier but still natural. Beauty Score: 5/5

  • Matrix Essentials Color Smart Shine Spray, £9.95

Beauty Editor: I sprayed this on my hair after styling and noticed that it had a glistening effect straight away. A fruity smelling spray that’s great for refreshing tired tresses. Rosheen: I found this workedbest if I sprayed it on before using straighteners, but it still felt a bit heavy. My hair looked glossier but the effect didn’t last all day. Beauty Score: 3/5

The Oscars 2010: Hairstyle Trend!

Celebrity hairstyles at the Oscars 2010

This year’s red carpet at the Oscars waved goodbye to overdone hairstyles and instead made way for a sleeker updo! Celebrities such as Rachel McAdams, Kristen Stewart, Nicole Richie, Diane Kruger, Amanda Seyfried and Sarah Jessica Parker, to name just a few, all opted for the super-slick, pulled back updo, and we reckon they are rocking the red carpet. The best bit about this trend is that any length of hair works, from super-short crops to Rapunzel-esque locks. All you need to do is brush your hair back into a ponytail or bun and clean up fly-aways with a good spritz of hairspray. Try Charles Worthington Results Maximum Hold Spray, £4.49. KS
