Beauty How-To: Kate Middleton's Wedding Make-Up

Kate Middleton at her wedding to Prince William

Kate Middleton decided to do her own make-up for her big day, a brave step with so many eyes on her, but didn’t she do a great job? Her subtle brown smoky eye and flushed pink cheeks were the perfect choice for the royal day. Manicurist Marina Sandova, from the Jo Hansford salon, popped into Clarence House yesterday to give her a classic nude manicure using Bourjois Rose Lounge, £5.99, topped with a subtle shimmer in Essie’s Allure, £9.95.

Here’s how to get her look.

  • Step 1: First you need to start with your eyes. Wash a neutral base over the whole lid, then use a slightly darker brown shade in the socket and slightly above.
  • Step 2: Line around the eyes with a brown/black kohl, take it the whole way around the eye and blend it in using the end of a cotton bud. Swipe on a layer of waterproof mascara – we don’t want the celebration tears ruining your look!
  • Step 3: Create a flawless base using a lightweight foundation. Something inbetween a foundation and a tinted moisturer will be perfect and won't look too heavy or thick.
  • Step 4: Add a pink bubblegum blush to the apples of your cheeks and blend it up towards your hair line.
  • Step 5: Brush over your brows with a dark brown eyebrow powder to make them look more defined.
  • Step 6: Finish the look with a swipe of nudey-pink gloss and voila – you’ve been transformed into the perfect princess!

Beauty Tried And Tested: The Best Quick Dry Nail Polish

Quick Dry Nail Polish by No7, Marks & Spencer, Rimmel, Bourjois put to the test

Tired of spending ages waiting around for your nails to dry? Then LOOK's very own Beauty Editor Sophie Beresiner and LOOK reader Rose Harper are here to help, as they've found four quick drying purple nail polishes to put to the test...

Beauty Editor: This deep aubergine purple polish looks slick but only after 3 coats, which means quite a bit more drying time… You decide whether this statement nail is worth the wait or not. Rose: Aubergine is my favourite kind of purple so I was looking forward to this one. It dried in a minute but I did find I had to apply more than two coats to get the intense colour, which defeated the point. Beauty Score: 2/5

Beauty Editor: The polish is exactly the colour of the bottle and the fan shaped brush means it applies so smoothly with zero fuss. Plus the perfect shade with winter knits. Rose: The colour and brush makes this my winner. It dried within seconds, and I only needed one coat and was good to go. This has definitely earned its place in my make up bag! Beauty Score: 5/5

Beauty Editor: This luscious violet really is on trend for this season, and what’s more two coats will be dry in seconds. Vampy perfection. Rose: I’ve fallen in love with violet, it glams up any outfit be it day or night. It dried within a minute clump free! Hooray! Beauty Score: 4/5

Beauty Editor: Ideal for girls on the go, plus with a vast selection of shades you’ll never be stuck for choice. Top coat will help you avoid chips on day one.Rose: Sweeping a couple of coats of this and dry before I knew it, makes this a great last minute fix, although it didn’t dry as quickly as it said. Beauty Score: 3/5

Beauty Tried And Tested: The Best Pearlescent Blushers

Blushers from Christian Dior, The Body Shop, Clinique and Bourjois

Want killer cheekbones to rival Kate Moss? Then LOOK’s very own Beauty Editor Sophie Beresiner and LOOK reader Holly Naftis are here to help, as they’ve searched the high street to find the four best pearlescent blushers guaranteed to highlight those cheekbones in just one sweep...

Beauty Editor: This had a beautiful pearly finish and gave my cheeks a soft, natural glow. It’s a little on the pricey side, but a great investment buy! Holly:This contained two pretty shades of pink to highlight and add colour to cheekbones. The rosy glow lasted the whole night without me having to reapply. I’d definitely wear it again. Beauty Score 5/5

Beauty Editor: I liked the pinky coral tone and the iridescent finish was lovely. Use your fingertips to apply it, as this creates a more natural flush. Holly: I only needed to apply a small amount, as the colour was very bold. I wasn’t keen on the fiddly little brush and the shimmer effect was a bit too much for me. Beauty Score 3/5

Beauty Editor: This is such a pretty palette that I didn’t want to mess it up! The lightest shade was amazing at highlighting, so I’d use it for that alone. Holly: Easy to apply and it felt soft on my skin. However, the colour was so faint that it’s more of a highlighter than a blusher. I had to reapply it throughout the day. Beauty Score 3/5

  • The Body Shop Shimmer Waves in Blush, £15.65

Beauty Editor: A summer make-up bag staple. The waves of colour gave my skin a healthy glow and the shimmer really accentuated my cheekbones. Holly: This left my skin with a sun-kissed glow and the individual colours work well as eyeshadows, too. However, the colour can look a little dark, so I had to apply it sparingly. Beauty Score 4/5

Beauty Tried And Tested: Black Kohl Eyeliners

Black Kohl Eyeliners from Bourjois, Sisley, Gosh and Givenchy

Want to know what the best beauty products are before you buy? LOOK is here to help... this week our very own Beauty Editor Sophie Beresiner and LOOK reader Caroline Arter have put black kohl eyeliners to the test...

Beauty Editor: Definition to die for! This jet black shade that looked even better when it had worn in a bit. It was really soft too - the best for drawing feline flicks.

Caroline: Silky soft and waterproof with five star staying power! Good for a day look but even better for a smoky night-time eye. Beauty Score: 5/5

Beauty Editor: The waxy finish helped this glide over my lids easily and I liked the way it smudged a little. I teamed it with lashings of mascara for the perfect sultry eye.  Caroline: This really made my eyes stand out. It was super soft to apply but it smudged easily so needed a few touch-ups throughout the day. Beauty Score: 3/5

Beauty Editor: I found this quite scratchy on my eyelid and it was tricky to blend. Good for a fine, subtle line though. Team it with a pinky blush and glossy nude lips.  Caroline: This one was a bit crumbly to apply and I had to go over it a few times. Long lasting but you have to keep the pencil sharp for it to be effective. Beauty Score: 2/5

  • Sisley Phyto-Kohl Perfect Eyeliner in Black, £28

Beauty Editor: I’ve used the same black liner for a while now but this one might just convince me to switch. It was easy to apply and the colour was so dramatic – no scribbling required. Caroline: This had a lovely soft texture, which meant it gave a lot of colour. The blender on the end was great for smudging too – my new makeup bag staple! Beauty Score: 4/5

Trend Alert! Metallic Make-Up

Trend Alert! Metallic Make-Up
10 November 2008
Written By: Sinead 0'Donoghue

Our love for metallics hits the beauty counters and Tinsletown as it becomes one of this seasons hottest looks.

You know metallic make-up is going to be huge when you not only see the trend appearing in the hottest catwalk shows such as Lanvin and Versace, but also when it hits the A-listers.

Mary-Kate Olsen was one of the first celebrities to jump on the trend when she stepped out on the red carpet with gold metallic eye shadow. Jennifer Lopez was not far behind - she looked stunning in silver when she covered her eyelids in a high-shine silver shade.

Luckily you don't need an A-list wage as this trend is one of the easiest and cheapest beauty looks to recreate. All you have to do is colour your eyelids with one of the hottest metallic shades around.

We love Bourjois fine powder eye shadow
