Blonde To Brunette: The Ultimate Hair Transformation

Lucy Woods blonde to brunette

Our Fashion News Editor Lucy Wood took the ultimate plunge this week, turning her dyed blonde hair back to a rich, dark brown (more like her natural colour!)

If you're thinking of going brunette and are clueless on how to make your colour last, or are naturally brown and want to know how to make your colour look its best, here are a few simple tips from colour expert Marianne Hayes, advanced creative director at Aveda...

  • Invest In Your Products

"A great shampoo and conditioner for coloured hair is a must, especially as you are spending so much in the salon. Aveda has a bespoke colour range, targeted for specific shades. which use a strong pigment concentrate to really give your hue a boost. I used Clove (£24) on Lucy's hair, which is amazing for brunettes. Not forgetting much needed nourishment – New Colour Conserve Daily Colour Protect (£17.50) is a great leave-in treatment for between salon visits that will not only give longevity to your colour, but also act as a moisture injection."

  • Like Your Skin, Hair Needs Protecting From The Sun (And Not Only On Holiday!)

"'If you're out and about during the spring/summer months, then don't forget to get protected from UV rays that will rapidly make your colour fade, Aveda's Hair Veil (£19) acts as the perfect barrier whilst simultaneously providing nourishment."

  • Get Conditioned

"Keeping your hair in optimum condition is also the secret behind maintaining a lustrous colour. Weekly treatments such as Aveda Damage Remedy Intensive Restructuring Treatment (£21.50) is a must-have addition to your weekly regime that will ensure your tresses are constantly feeling loved and your colour shiny."

So there you have it, taking care of brown hair has never been easier, now there's no excuse not to take the plunge!

Profits from Laura Bailey's hair accessories and Aveda's candle go to WaterAid

Eco-friendly haircare pioneers Aveda have been celebrating Earth Month every April since 1999, raising over $14 million for environmental causes. This year, the campaign aims to raise $4 million to empower local communities to help make clean water accessible for everyone, everywhere. We are so excited that Aveda has teamed up with model, Fairtrade ambassador and Aveda super-fan Laura Bailey to design two beautiful recycled brass hair accessories, priced at £15 and £25, for creating loads of gorgeous updo hairstyles – £5 from the sale of each piece in the UK in April will be donated to WaterAid. Aveda are also launching a limited-edition lavender soy wax candle, retailing at £16, made from 100% organic ingredients – £12.80 of every Light The Way candle sold in the UK will be donated, too. Guilt-free shopping at its best!

Beauty Tried And Tested: The Best Hair Shaping Waxes

Shaping Waves from Trevor Sorbie, Aveda, Wella and Shu Uemura

Want to know what the best beauty products are before you buy? LOOK is here to help... today our very own Beauty Editor Sophie Beresiner and LOOK reader Polly Corden have put hair shaping wax to the test...

Beauty Editor: A styling wax that also moisturises is always worth a try and this one held styles easily and completely zapped any frizz. Polly:This worked wonders on my too-silky-to-style hair and I only needed a small amount. I also liked that I could still play with my hair without feeling the product in it. Beauty Score: 5/5

  • Aveda Light Elements Shaping Wax, £20

Beauty Editor: This smelt so amazing I didn’t know whether it was for hair or to slather on my body! Gives locks a lovely shine but you only need a small amount. Polly: I found this felt very sticky on my hands and it wasn’t easy to apply because it was so creamy. My hair looked shinier but without much hold. Beauty Score: 2/5

  • Wella Shockwaves Shaping Wax, £2.99

Beauty Editor: I used this on my friend’s super-short pixie crop and it looked really funky. It was easy to mould and you can just use it again to restyle for the evening. Polly:I really liked the consistency of this. It’s a proper wax that’s easy to apply and gave my hair a lovely sheen. I needed to use a lot for a good effect but my style lasted all day. Beauty Score: 3/5

  • Shu Uemura Art of Hair Shape Paste Sculpting Putty, £21.50

Beauty Editor: With enough memory to rival an elephant’s, this keeps any style for as long as you want, without making your hair stiff. Short hair’s NBF. Polly:This was easy to work into my hair and it held my style right through to the evening. I really liked the matt, textured finish too. Beauty Score: 4/5
