Now, we don’t want to get all lovey dovey on you this Valentines Day, especially for those singletons out there, but there’s something you ought to know about the colour red. Apparently, wearing the shade, in different hues can mean so many different things- from romantic and sexual (as you’d expect) to deep thinking and original. But what shade is the one you want? We caught up with Lilian Verner-Bonds, a colour expert, to reveal exactly what red you should be wearing, and hopefully just in time before you’ve planned your ‘date-night’ outfit.
Red isn’t just psychological, it’s bang on trend too, we saw red flares across Acne and Lacoste, while it also being the biggest lip shade of Spring Summer 2016, as seen at Anna Sui, Jason Wu and Giles! eBay also revealed that they’ve seen a 180% spike in red sales over the last month. Okey we get it, red is big news, now it’s time to find out which red will really suit you…
Lillian: ‘The brightest red of all, scarlet red is the epitome of Saint Valentine and the perfect shade for romance as its energy inspires action and anticipation.’
Beauty Tip: Go for a bold matte scarlet lip, it’ll make your teeth appear whiter too. We love Maybelline Color Sensational Lipstick in Infared, £4.49
Lillian: ‘Crimson red has a cool touch of blue in it, which communicates originality and style. The crimson red personality is an individual and free spirit, who believes that the secret of life is to be loved.’
Style Tip: Update a boring black outfit with a flare of red in your accessories like this Chain Strap Leather Shoulder Bag, £4.49.
Lillian: ‘With a touch of yellow, those drawn to flame red have a real zest and zeal for life. They are as quick as a burning flame if caught up in love and often have a quirky sense of fashion.
Style Tip: It doesn’t have to be summer to wear flowers in your hair. Wear a floral crown, like this Asos, £12 one, with effortless waves.

Lillian: ‘Russet is a shade of red with a hint of black and orange. As a darker red, emotionally it encourages quiet confidence. Those attracted to russet red do not like to draw too much attention to themselves yet command a room with their subtle smoulder.’
Beauty Tip: One of the most anticipated hair colours of summer, russet red looks amazing on porcelain skin, to really make it pop, as seen on model Lera Tribel at the Jasper Conran SS16 show.
Lillian: ‘Maroon is a dark shade of red with black beneath its surface. The nature of the colour is that it shows one has endurance; maroon lends the power of deep thinking and understanding’.
Beauty Tip: Take beauty cues from Paul Smith and rock an almost burgundy nail. Keeping the shape short and sweet will nail the trend. We love this Crystal-G Premium UV Soak Off Gel Nail Polish, £3.99.
