My longstanding love of dewy skin has meant that I steer clear from any kind of matte foundations in fear that they’ll leave my skin looking a tad unnatural. It’s not that I don’t like the sound of a pore refining, oil banishing, utterly airbrushing base for my face, it’s just whenever I use them, they leave my skin looking chalky and they tend to feel really heavy.
Don’t get me wrong I want a perfect, non-shiny face as much as the next person, but I want to not look like a clown even more. I guess, what I’m trying to say is I’ve never come across a matte foundation that has managed to float my boat. Am I biased? Perhaps, I do like to look ‘au naturel’, but I’m sure we can both agree that doesn’t have to mean no to the matte.
So, try to understand just how big a deal it is for me to be wearing a totally, 100% matte foundation on my face right now. Yup! Believe me, I never thought this day would come, but as I sit here typing this I can admit that my favourite foundation currently is none other than Nars’ Velvet Matte Skin Tint Foundation SPF30, £30.
How is it so life alteringly different? Well, unlike any other matte foundation I’ve tried it’s not in the least bit heavy or cakey. It’s something that is quite hard to explain, because I’ve never tried anything quite like it before, and unless you’ve tried it I doubt you will have either. It’s enriched with vitamins C, E, contains SPF 30, and is packed full of shine-stopping ingredients, so there’s no need for your powder.

It leaves a beautifully velvet, refined finish, but somehow manages to leave your skin looking wonderfully natural. It’s not drying, hides every pore and imperfection but lets your skin breathe. Maybe it’s because it’s a skin tint rather than a heavier foundation. Who knows. But, to say I have been converted would, as I’m sure you can agree, be an understatement. For now at least, I wont be using anything else!
