You’ve probably never thought about it before, but it turns out you can tell a lot about your health just by looking at your nails. From vitamin deficiencies to not drinking enough water (oops) there’s a lot going on under that perfect mani that could actually reveal a lot about your wellbeing.
So it’s time to ditch the gels, wipe off that polish and give your natural nail beds a reaaaal good inspection because here’s the things your nails might be trying to tell you…
Dry and brittle nails could be down to a few things. If you swim, surf or like to take hella long baths – all that exposure to water can cause nails to get dry and brittle. However, dry and cracked nails can also be a sign you’re not getting enough vitamins in your diet. Time to up those green veggies! (Avocado on toast totally counts btw…)
While most people believe that those white flecks on your nail beds mean you’re lacking in calcium and need to drink more milk (thanks, mum) that’s actually more myth than fact. White spots on your nails are usually caused by some kind of trauma to the nail bed – like stubbing your toe. So if you’ve got white spots on your nails, it’s probs an indication of your clumsiness – not your calcium intake!
Look out for the lunula!
You know that little white half-moon shape at the start of your nail bed? Yeah, that’s your lunula. If you can visibly see 8-10 of these on your fingers, then good news – everything is in top shape and you’re basically the picture of health. However, when you’re feeling a bit run down. you might notice that these half-moons fade (or disappear completely!) Don’t worry though – once you’re feeling back in the game, they’ll come back.
