Backstage Beauty Tips From The X Factor

Julia Carta doing Ella Henderson's make-up on The X Factor

We're already hooked on this year's The X Factor, so when we got the chance to find out all about the backstage beauty secrets, we couldn't wait to share them with you! Ella Henderson embraced a girlie vintage look with ’60s hair and make-up – we loved her gorgeous glowing skin. Julia Carta, head make-up artist on the show, spilled the beans on how she created Ella's look and what hero products she always has in her beauty kit.

"This year, we're making sure the contestants have really flawless, luminous complexions and we're working closely with skincare brand Intraceuticals to get their skin looking perfect. The make-up we use on set has to stay put for hours, so it's important to prep your base with Urban Decay Pore Perfecting Complexion Primer Potion, £19. This gives foundation something to cling on to so it lasts."

"I used Rimmel Match Perfection Foundation, £8.99, on Ella to even out her skintone. Then I used Rimmel Match Perfection Illuminating Concealer, £5.99, under her eyes. This is a great multitasker because it doubles up as a highlighter, so you can use it on your cheekbones, too. Blend the concealer out with your fingertips and the light-reflecting properties will give skin a natural luminosity."

Julia's hero product: "The one product I always have in my kit is Urban Decay Naked Palette, £36, it has such a great range of eyeshadows that can be used to create any look. For Ella's smoky eyes, I used the grey/black Gunmetal shade." VJ
