3 Amazing Beauty Buys... That REALLY Work!

Swiss Dent nano whitening toothpaste and Vichy New Aftersun SOS Balm

Want to be let in on a few of LOOK's Beauty Editor Sophie’s secrets? Oh go on then...

"If I had to tell you about only three products that I defy you not to find jaw-droppingly amazing it’s these. Calculated from my personal usage to compliment ratio; this stuff REALLY works! I promise."

Swiss Dent Nano Whitening Toothpaste, £15 OK I’ll admit it, I had this lingering in my ‘spares’ cupboard, and only used it when my Colgate ran out and my local Tesco was closed. Three days later I was baffled at all the compliments on my white teeth and finally put two and two together. And this from someone who has tried every whitening method under the sun… Available Nationwide and online at harveynicholls.com PH Advantage Acne Treatment, from £20 Years of testing truckloads of different skincare gave me beauty editor’s syndrome – unpredictable skin. After a good few years trying to fix it (including a couple of doctor visits) I got this on my desk. It’s medical grade skincare, which sounds extreme, but even if you only have the odd breakout and sensitive skin like me it’s a godsend. Clear skin in two weeks – yes please! phadvantage.co.uk Vichy New After Sun SOS Balm, £10.00 Even if you’re not lucky enough to get some winter sun like I just did, it’s worth bulk buying in time for summer. Two hours in South African sun + local ineffective sunscreen = embarrassing pink skin bikini. After three days of my usual aftersun not helping I tried this one, and went from pink to brown within a few hours – I kid you not. Stockist 0800 169 6193 -SB

The Amazing Beauty Secret You Need To Know About...

Egyptian Magic Skin Balm

One of our favourite things about being backstage at London Fashion Week 2010 is poking around in make-up artists’ kits and seeing what the pros really use. It’s mostly blatant nosiness but there’s always the slight chance that you’ll stumble across a miracle product that’s been kept secret for all these years…..

This season, we discovered Egyptian Magic at the House of Holland show. Top make-up artist Lucia Pica was applying this amazing beauty balm to the models’ cheekbones and down their noses to create the best highlighting we’ve ever seen. What’s more, this solves-all skin cream has healing properties and can be used on chapped lips, scars, stretch marks, eczema and even to smooth and de-frizz your hair!

Clearly we’re not the first to catch on though, Egyptian Magic already has a hoard of celeb fans including Juliette Lewis, Kate Hudson and Madonna. You can thank us later!

Beauty Tried And Tested: The Best Translucent Powders

Translucent Powders are put to the test by LOOK's beauty panel

Want to know what the best translucent powders are before you buy? LOOK is here to help... This week, our very own Beauty Editor Sophie Beresiner and LOOK reader Elinor McCue have put four to the test.

Beauty Editor:  "I dusted this on over my tinted moisturiser in the morning and it kept my skin matte all day but still looked natural. A good everyday staple." Elinor: "This had a really fine, smooth texture. The powder was quite light but it lasted for the majority of the day. Amazing quality for such a cheap price." Beauty Score: 4/5

Beauty Editor: "I found this quite tricky to apply and it didn’t look very even on my skin. It kept me shine free all day though, so it's great for oily skin types." Elinor: "I liked that this came with a useful applicator but I found the texture of the powder clumpy and it didn’t sit on my skin." Beauty Score: 2/5

  • MAC Prep + Prime Transparent Finishing Powder, £17

Beauty Editor: "Once you get over the initial weirdness of putting white powder on, this product is brilliant. Completely transparent and gave my skin a beautiful finish." Elinor: "I loved this product. It reduced any shine and gave my skin a healthy glow. It lasted throughout a girls’ night out and I didn't have to keep retouching every five minutes!" Beauty Score: 5/5

  • Barry M Translucent Face Powder, £5.95

Beauty Editor: "The perfect product if you want a good coverage but make sure you tap off the excess powder before applying to stop it looking cakey." Elinor: "I ended up wearing more of this than I wanted because there was no powder tray, which meant that some product was wasted. It had a smooth and silky texture but was a bit on the thick side." Beauty Score: 3/5

Nicola Roberts Takes Autumn's Maxi Skirt Trend For A Spin

Nicola Roberts wears Autumn's Maxi Skirt on The red carpet

Nicola Roberts hit Harrods’s red carpet last night for the re-launch of her Dainty Doll make-up range, but it wasn’t her make-up (standout as it was) that caught our eye, it was her outfit. The popstress had laid-back glam sewn up with her killer combo of Belle & Bunty flowing maxi skirt, cute printed tee, antique jewels and let’s not forget to mention those pretty platforms you can just see poking out. She’s given us a serious case of style-spiration with this look – bet they’ll be a few maxis swishing around the LOOK office tomorrow. Thanks Nic! FD

Beauty Tried And Tested: Oil Free Moisturisers

Beauty Tried And Tested: Oil Free Moisturisers from high street brands

Want to know what the best beauty products are before you buy? LOOK is here to help... this week our very own Beauty Editor Sophie Beresiner and LOOK reader Emma Hallsworth have put oil-free moisturisers to the test...

Beauty Editor: This smelt wonderful and it was so light I could hardly feel it on my skin. It’s a bit pricey but the anti-ageing mimosa makes it a great investment product.  Emma: This had a nice smooth finish and made my skin feel soft and clean. My skin was moisturised but not shiny – perfect!  Beauty Score: 3/5

Beauty Editor: The best for sensitive skin. This dual-purpose product actually exfoliates and moisturises skin in one go. By my calculations, that’s an extra 10 minutes in bed.Emma: Although this was the thickest of the lot, it was still easy to apply. It made my skin feel a bit sticky, but was really moisturising.  Beauty Score: 4/5

  • Face Boutique Fresh Faced Oil-Free Moisturiser, £12

Beauty Editor: This is specially designed for young skin as it balances the amount of oil, meaning less breakouts.  Emma: I was quite surprised when this came out clear, not white, but it made my skin feel smooth and soft. Although the gel was thick, it sank in quickly. I’d use it again. Beauty Score: 5/5

  • Kerstin Florian Spa Face Clarifying Sorbier Crème, £24

Beauty Editor: An ultra-light cream that felt instantly calming on my face and kept it hydrated for hours. My pores looked smaller and my skintone was more even.  Emma: I wasn’t sure about this at first because it smelt plasticy, but it sank in quickly and made my skin super-soft and much brighter. Beauty Score: 3/5
